The story

Painted from the window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy in the small hours before dawn, The Starry Night is the view Van Gogh saw and the one he felt — a real valley beneath an imagined, roiling heaven. The sky churns in spirals of chrome and cobalt; a cypress, the tree of mourning, flames up toward stars swollen with light; a quiet village sleeps under it all, unmoved. He thought it a failure. It has become perhaps the most loved painting on earth — proof that a private night, honestly rendered, can belong to everyone.
