The story

Two lovers kneel at the edge of a flowering meadow, wrapped in a single robe of gold — his ornament all hard rectangles, hers soft circles and blossoms, the two dissolving into one shimmering field. Painted at the height of Klimt’s “Golden Period,” when he worked real gold leaf into the surface, The Kiss turns a private moment into an icon, secular and sacred at once. Look closely at where the meadow ends: the couple embrace on the very brink of a gold abyss, oblivious. Love as the whole world, and the edge of it, in one breath.
