THE OLD MASTERS

The print is the point

Anyone can sell the image — it’s public domain. What you’re buying here is the object: how faithfully, and how durably, the masterwork lands on your wall.

The story

Monet dug a pond at Giverny, planted it with lilies, and spent the last thirty years of his life painting its surface — nearly 250 times. Here there is no bank, no sky, no horizon: only the water, holding clouds and willows in reflection while the lilies float between worlds. Your eye can never quite decide whether it is looking down into depth or up into light. It is Impressionism dissolving toward abstraction, a whole cosmos found in a garden pond. Calm made visible.
