The story
Van Gogh painted the sunflowers to decorate a bedroom for Gauguin, who was coming to live with him in Arles — an act of hope from a man with little reason for it. He set himself the hardest possible problem: yellow flowers, in a yellow vase, against a yellow wall, holding it all apart by the sheer force of touch. Some blooms are fresh and heavy-headed, others already gone to seed and bristling, so the canvas holds the full arc of a life in one vase. He worked fast, in the heat, chasing the light before the flowers wilted. The most generous painting ever made about a colour.
