The story

Van Gogh painted this in his first week at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, working in the walled garden, calling the work a lightning rod for his illness. There is no sign of distress in it — only a crowded, jostling bed of irises seen close and low, every blade and petal given its own contour, the blues cooled against orange earth and a bank of marigolds behind. One white iris stands apart at the left, alone among the blue, and once you have seen it you cannot unsee it. Japanese prints taught him this flattened, decorative crowding. Grief and beauty, growing in the same bed.
