The story
On Sunday afternoons the working people of Montmartre danced outdoors at the Moulin de la Galette, and Renoir carried his canvas up the hill to paint them from life. His real subject is the light: sun falls through the acacia leaves and scatters across faces, straw hats and coats in flecks of blue and rose, so the whole crowd seems to flicker. Nobody had painted dappled shade like this before — critics complained the dancers looked mildewed. It is the great Impressionist picture of ordinary happiness, a summer afternoon caught before it could end. One of the most joyful paintings ever made.
