The story
Klimt spent three years and a fortune in gold leaf on this portrait of the Viennese hostess Adele Bloch-Bauer, and the result dissolves a real woman into a shimmering field of ornament — spirals, eyes, and Byzantine mosaic — from which only her face, throat and hands emerge as living flesh. It is the summit of his golden period, painted the same year as The Kiss. The picture was looted by the Nazis, hung for decades in Vienna as a national treasure, and finally, after a famous restitution case, returned to Adele’s heirs. A face made almost entirely of gold, and one of the most storied paintings of the twentieth century.
