The story
Cézanne painted this mountain near his home in Aix more than sixty times, and in the last years he stopped describing it and began building it — laying the whole landscape down in overlapping patches of colour, each a small flat plane, so that hillside, tree and sky lock together like masonry. The mountain seems to assemble itself out of the picture as you watch. Picasso and Braque studied exactly these late canvases and went home to invent Cubism; Cézanne, they said, was “the father of us all.” A humble provincial view, painted until it became the hinge on which twentieth-century art turned.
