The story
Of all the Montmartre performers, Jane Avril was Lautrec’s favourite — intelligent, melancholy, a dancer who performed almost to herself — and he gave her his best poster. She kicks one leg high at the Jardin de Paris, her face rapt and inward; and in a stroke of pure invention the neck of a double bass rears up from the orchestra pit in the foreground, its scroll and the player’s hand framing the whole scene like a curtain drawn back. The idea is startlingly modern, a century ahead of graphic design. Elegant, strange and tender all at once — the poster as a portrait of a real, particular person.
