THE OLD MASTERS

The print is the point

Anyone can sell the image — it’s public domain. What you’re buying here is the object: how faithfully, and how durably, the masterwork lands on your wall.

The story

An advertisement for a fashionable Montmartre café-concert, and one of the most elegant designs Lautrec ever made. The dancer Jane Avril sits in the foreground in a sweep of black, a picture of poised boredom; behind her the critic Édouard Dujardin leans in, top hat and yellow gloves; on the distant stage a singer throws up her arms — but Lautrec crops her head clean off, so all we get is the famous long black gloves. Everything is arrangement: the black mass of the gown, the mustard ground, the economy of line. The flat colour and the hard crop come from the Japanese woodblock prints Paris was collecting, and the café itself was dressed in Japanese style. The whole seductive world of 1890s Montmartre, in three colours.
