The story
Morning mist rises through a stand of ancient pines; a great fallen trunk lies broken across a ravine, and on and around it four bear cubs tumble and clamber while the light comes up gold behind the trees. Shishkin was Russia’s master of the forest — no one has ever painted bark and pine-needle and dawn haze more lovingly — and the playful bears were added by his friend Konstantin Savitsky. It is the most beloved landscape in Russia, reproduced on everything from gallery walls to sweet wrappers, and it earns the affection: a huge, hushed wilderness, and inside it a small warm moment of life waking up.
