The story
Redouté was called “the Raphael of flowers,” court painter to two French queens, and his Les Roses is the most beautiful book of roses ever made. Here a single cabbage rose — Rosa centifolia, the “hundred-leaved” rose — is given the full weight of a portrait: the heavy, many-petalled bloom bending its stem, a bud beside it, every leaf and thorn exact, floated on the bare white page. He achieved those luminous, translucent petals with a refined stipple-engraving technique printed in colour and finished by hand. It is botany raised to the level of high art — rigorous enough for a scientist, ravishing enough for a queen’s library. The definitive rose.
