THE OLD MASTERS

The print is the point

Anyone can sell the image — it’s public domain. What you’re buying here is the object: how faithfully, and how durably, the masterwork lands on your wall.

The story

The biologist Ernst Haeckel believed nature was an artist, and in Art Forms in Nature he set out to prove it — rendering jellyfish, radiolarians, and orchids with a precision so exquisite it tipped into the sublime. His medusae hang in the dark like chandeliers, their trailing tentacles arranged with almost deliberate grace. One of them, Desmonema annasethe, he named for his beloved late wife, its flowing filaments a quiet memorial. Science and grief and design, fused on a single plate. The direct ancestor of the modern love of symmetry.
