The story

At the far western edge of the world lay a garden where three nymphs, the Hesperides, guarded a tree of golden apples with the help of the ever-wakeful dragon Ladon. Leighton paints them in perfect indolent harmony — three women drowsing and singing in a circle, the great serpent coiled affectionately around them and the tree, everyone at peace in the long golden afternoon before Hercules arrives to spoil it. The tondo, the circular format, turns the whole scene into an ornament, all curve and gold. It is late-Victorian classicism at its most sumptuous and most serene: paradise, painted in the moment just before the theft.
