The story

Newly born from the sea-foam, the goddess of love arrives on the shore standing in a scallop shell, blown by the breath of the winds while a nymph rushes to clothe her. Botticelli painted her around 1485 — the first monumental female nude of the Renaissance, drawn not from a model but from an ideal, her impossible grace half Greek statue, half spring morning. Fifteenth-century Florence rediscovering the ancient gods, and finding them beautiful. The definitive image of Venus, and a cornerstone of any mythological collection.
