The story

Martin painted the apocalypse of the Book of Revelation as sheer catastrophic force: whole cities torn from their foundations and hurled into a red abyss, mountains toppling, tiny human figures falling like sparks into the fire. He was the great showman of Romantic doom, wildly popular with the public and sneered at by critics, and this is his masterpiece of destruction — reportedly inspired by crossing the industrial Black Country by night, its furnaces glowing across the dark. Terrible and thrilling in equal measure, it is the sublime pushed to its absolute limit: the moment the whole created order comes apart.
