The story

Painted just after Friedrich’s marriage — possibly a memory of the honeymoon — three small figures cluster at the lip of the blinding white chalk cliffs of Rügen, framed by trees that arch over them like a Gothic window. One woman points down into the vertiginous gap; a man peers over on hands and knees; a third gazes out to the sea, where two tiny sails hang on the horizon. The drop is terrifying and the day is radiant, and the sea beyond is pure serene blue. Friedrich turns a seaside walk into a meditation on the edge of things — the sublime, found on holiday.
