The story

Warned that the Sirens’ song would lure his ship to the rocks, Ulysses had himself lashed to the mast and his crew’s ears stopped with wax, so he alone could hear it and live. Draper makes the temptation vivid: rather than distant rocks, three sirens climb aboard the ship itself — the first still a fish-tailed sea-creature, the next two transforming into beautiful women as they come — while the bound hero strains toward them and the deaf oarsmen row grimly on. It is the whole meaning of the myth in one image: desire made physical and inescapable, and the will holding just barely against it. Edwardian classicism at its most dramatic.
