The story

Four centuries after Botticelli, Bouguereau took the same subject and applied to it every resource of the French academy: flawless anatomy, a surface polished until the brushwork vanishes, and a spiralling crowd of nereids, tritons and putti arranged around the standing goddess like a wave. Venus rises on her shell in a pose lifted from antique sculpture, arms up in her own hair, entirely unbothered by the commotion. The Impressionists were painting a mile away and thought this the enemy; a century later the sheer craft is undeniable again. The most technically perfect nude of the nineteenth century.
