The story

The boy-emperor Heliogabalus, the story goes, once smothered his dinner guests under so many rose petals dropped from a false ceiling that some of them suffocated in the perfume. Alma-Tadema paints the fatal luxury at its height: the emperor reclining above in gold silk, watching from a safe distance as a soft pink avalanche of petals buries the revellers below. To get the petals right he had fresh roses shipped from the Riviera to his London studio every week for four months through the winter. The result is decadence rendered as pure beauty — sunlit marble, silk, and an endless fall of blossom. Sumptuous, sinister, and impossible to look away from.
